Historic Quang Ngai has much to offer

Online Travel Vietnam: Quang Ngai has a peaceful combination of rivers, mountains and waterfalls together with many old relics and architectural works.

All these beautiful features make Quang Ngai an attractive land that tourists should not miss out on when discovering the Central region.

Quang Ngai is home to many ancient works such as Sa Huynh Culture's archaeological relics, Thien An Pagoda, Chau Sa ancient citadel and Dam Toai military tunnel.

But sadly, the area is known the world over for Son My relic site where a barbaric massacre was committed by U.S. soldiers.

The site is located on the land where American troops cruelly massacred 504 local people, mostly the elderly, women and children, on the morning of 16 March 1968. Son My Site is situated in Tu Cung Hamlet, Tinh Khe Commune, Son Tinh District, Quang Ngai Province.

Crossing the entrance gate, at the end of the lane, visitors will see the main memorial with spiraling incense smoke. On its pedestal, there are the statues of victims showing their panic before their horrific deaths and on the two sides of the entrance, there are many small statues describing various positions of the victims when they fell.

The House of Evidence lies on the left of the entrance surrounded by trimmed trees in the shape of tombs. The exhibits in the House are documents, photos and objects which testify to the massacre such as shirts, a pair of sandals of a murdered child, all kinds of cups and plates, cookers and pans holed by cartridges and wooden bells used for reciting prayers. Outside the house are some steles scattering over the hamlets at places where the massacre occurred.

On a more positive note, Quang Ngai is also famous for many landscapes such as stunning beaches of Sa Huynh, Khe Hai, Minh Tan, Truong Luy national relic and the most popular Ly Son Island which is well-know as the kingdom of garlic.

Covering an area of 10 square kilometers, Ly Son Island, also called Cu Lao Re, is 18 nautical miles east offshore Quang Ngai mainland, and is composed of Big Island and Small Island with a total area of over 10 km2, divided into An Vinh, An Binh and An Hai communes.

Tourists can reach Ly Son Island via boat from Sa Ky fishing port at 8 a.m. every morning. Ly Son is called the kingdom of garlic because huge garlic fields are all around.

Ly Son Island was hardly touched during the revolution wars and it has hundreds of cultural and historical relics and diversified architecture.

Meanwhile Truong Luy, known as the ‘longest monument in Southeast Asia', was discovered by domestic and foreign archaeologists in 2005. Built between the 17th and 19th centuries, the 130km stone wall stretches from Tra Bong District through nine other districts in Quang Ngai Province to An Lao District in the neighboring province of Binh Dinh.
